According to Mallory Fleming, the history of volleyball can be traced back to humble beginnings. The sport began in 1895 as the creation of William G. Morgan. Mallory Fleming explains that Morgan combined aspects from baseball, basketball, handball and tennis into this new sport.
Although minor variations are used in many instances, Mallory Fleming states that most leagues—domestic, national and international—apply the same set of rules and regulations. The court is divided in half by the net. Each team holds six players, with teams stationed on either side of the net. The teams are divided into front and back rows.
